Anillo de S'Gravesande

NOMBRE:                     ANILLO DE S'GRAVESANDE

LARGO (cm):               24,0

ANCHO (cm):               12,0

ALTO (cm):                   33,0

MATERIAL:                   HIERRO, LATÓN, MADERA

DATACIÓN:                   PRINCIPIOS DEL s. XX

Nº CATALOGACIÓN:   C-09
                                     CALOR-003
                                     16.02.001

NAME:                        S'GRAVESANDE RING

DIMENSIONS (cm):   24 x 12 x 33

MATERIAL:                IRON, BRASS, WOOD

DATING:                     EARLY 20th CENTURY

CALL NUMBER:         C-09
                                   HEAT-001
                                  16.02.001

This instrument was used to demonstrate the cubic dilation of metals by the action of heat.

It uses a metal ring through which a metal ball, which has around the same diameter as the ring, easily passes at its average temperature. When we heat the ball with a spirit lamp, we observe that it doesn’t pass through the ring due to the expansion of the metal ball.

ANNEU DE S'GRAVESANDE

Law or phenomenon:
The volume of a body increases when it is heated (cubical expansion). An empty body expands as much as if it were full.

Description:
It is formed by a brass ring and a ball of the same material which goes through the ring.

Experience:
We heat the ball and we prove that it can't go through the ring. If we heat the ring and the ball at the same time, the ball will go through the ring easily.

Note:
At the moment of a temperature rise, the glass tank thermometer dilates but, as mercury expands much more than the glass bulb, the mercury rises in the tube because the glass bulb volume’s increase is insignificant compared with that of the mercury.
